Overview
Curatorial Note
Sole solo album by Spanish cantaora Gitana Pepa de Benito (Josefa Peña Reyes), recorded with guitarist Antonio Moya and released by Harmonia Mundi in 1999. Born in Utrera into the influential Pinini family, Pepa de Benito inherited a locally rooted flamenco tradition transmitted primarily through family and community practice. The album documents repertories closely associated with Utrera and the Pinini lineage, including cantiñas, fandangos por soleá, siguiriyas, soleares, bulerías, wedding songs, and an alboreá. Its restrained voice-and-guitar setting foregrounds regional vocal style and orally transmitted repertory rather than contemporary commercial production. As Pepa de Benito’s only solo recording, Yo vengo de Utrera constitutes an important document of Calé musical self-representation, women’s participation in flamenco transmission, and the distinctive Gitano performing traditions of Utrera in late twentieth-century Andalusia.
