Overview
Curatorial Note
Led by the celebrated Romani clarinetist Selim Sesler, The Road to Keşan documents the musical world of Turkish Roma musicians in Thrace, particularly the repertories associated with weddings and communal celebrations around Keşan. Ethnomusicologist Sonia Tamar Seeman's involvement gives the recording an unusual documentary depth: the musicians participated in shaping the selection and sequence of the repertoire, while the accompanying materials contextualize the music within local Romani social life. The album is an important sound document of Roman musical practice at the crossroads of Turkish, Balkan, and eastern Mediterranean traditions
