Overview
Curatorial Note
This cassette edition of O Suno – The Dream – Az Álom: Gipsy Folk Songs from Hungary documents the distinctive musical practice of Kalyi Jag (“Black Fire”), one of the most influential ensembles in the modern presentation of Hungarian Roma folk music. Rooted particularly in the traditions of Vlax Roma communities of northeastern Hungary, the group combines Romani-language song with characteristic techniques such as oral bass, vocal percussion, hand clapping and everyday rhythmic instruments, alongside guitar and other string instruments. Rather than reproducing the repertory of the professional Hungarian “Gypsy orchestra,” Kalyi Jag brought community-based Roma vocal and dance traditions to the concert stage and to commercial recording. Released by Hungaroton Classic, this recording is significant both as a document of late twentieth-century Hungarian Roma musical culture and as an example of the wider circulation and institutional recognition of Vlax Roma folk traditions through the recording industry.
