Overview
Curatorial Note
Released by Hungaroton in 1987, Fekete Tűz / Black Fire – Gypsy Folk Songs from Hungary was Kalyi Jag’s first LP and became a landmark recording in the public presentation of Hungarian Roma folk music. Rooted primarily in the musical traditions of Vlax Roma communities from northeastern Hungary, the ensemble brought community-based vocal repertories onto the concert stage through characteristic techniques such as oral bass, vocal percussion, hand clapping and rhythmic accompaniment, supplemented by instruments including guitar and mandolin. The album emerged from a broader period of Roma cultural self-representation in Hungary and helped establish a model for subsequent Roma folk ensembles in the country and beyond. Ethnomusicologist Katalin Kovalcsik, who contributed the liner notes, later described the record’s appearance in 1987 as a turning point in the musical life of Hungarian Roma communities. As both a commercial recording and a document of Roma cultural affirmation during late socialist Hungary, SLPX 18132 occupies an important place in the history of recorded Romani music in Central Europe.
