Overview
Curatorial Note
Volume 4 of Le Chant du Monde’s Grands Cantaores du Flamenco series brings together historical recordings of Fernando Fernández Monje, known as Terremoto de Jerez, one of the major Gitano voices associated with Jerez de la Frontera. The selection encompasses central forms of cante jondo and the Jerez repertory, including siguiriyas, soleares, bulerías, fandangos and bulerías por soleá, with guitar accompaniment by Manuel Morao and Paco de Antequera. Drawing on recordings originally produced under the direction of flamencologist José Blas Vega and subsequently reframed within Mario Bois’s French anthology series, the album documents both the expressive aesthetics of Gitano flamenco in Jerez and the international archival circulation of canonical flamenco recordings during the late twentieth century.
