Overview
Curatorial Note
This bilingual Czech–Romani graphic memoir preserves the testimony of Sofia Taikon (1931–2005), a Polish-born Romani survivor of the Nazi genocide. Based on the life story she recounted to Swedish writer Gunilla Lundgren and illustrated by Amanda Eriksson, the work follows Žofi from her prewar childhood and her family’s flight from persecution through deportation to Auschwitz-Birkenau, imprisonment in Ravensbrück, the murder of her relatives, and her eventual evacuation to Sweden. Conceived in an accessible graphic format for younger readers while retaining the character of survivor testimony, the book constitutes an important contribution to the documentation and transmission of Romani Holocaust memory. The 2022 Kher edition is presented in a reversible bilingual Czech–Romani format, bringing together Holocaust education, autobiographical memory, visual narrative, and contemporary Romani-language transmission.
