Overview
Curatorial Note
Valaha madarak voltunk (Once We Were Birds) is an illustrated bilingual Romani–Hungarian book for children, compiled by Roma cultural activist, journalist, and educator Ágnes Daróczi. Bringing together nursery rhymes, poems, songs, and short verbal forms in both languages, the volume approaches language transmission as a means of strengthening cultural continuity while introducing young readers to Romani linguistic and cultural heritage. Conceived for Roma and non-Roma children alike, it also reflects a broader educational commitment to intercultural recognition from early childhood. The collection builds upon Daróczi’s earlier work producing bilingual educational material for Roma children and represents a contemporary contribution to the preservation and intergenerational transmission of Romani in Hungary. Illustrated by Henrik Kállai and published by Noran Libro in Budapest in 2022. The Baxtale Archive copy is inscribed and signed by the author, dated 1 March 2024.
