A biographical and family investigation into the life of philologist John Sampson, reconstructed by his grandson Anthony Sampson through letters, personal documents, rhymes, and illustrations. Beyond its family narrative, the book is valuable for the history of Romani scholarship in Britain and for examining the complex relationships between Romani communities and the non-Roma scholars, writers, and artists who studied and represented them around the turn of the twentieth century.
