Országos kiállítása 1989
Curatorial Note
Published for the Second National Exhibition of Self-Taught Roma Artists held at the Néprajzi Múzeum in Budapest in 1989, this bilingual catalogue documents a formative moment in the institutional recognition and public presentation of Roma visual art in Hungary. The exhibition material was collected and the catalogue edited by Ágnes Daróczi and István Kerékgyártó, with the Országos Közművelődési Központ and the Néprajzi Múzeum serving as organizing institutions. Bringing together works by Roma artists working primarily in painting, drawing and sculpture, the publication records the consolidation of a distinct field of Roma artistic production and cultural self-representation during the final years of socialist Hungary. Its designation of the participants as “self-taught” reflects the art-historical and institutional terminology through which Roma artists were framed at the time, making the catalogue significant not only as documentation of the exhibition but also as a source for the historiography of Roma visual culture in Hungary.
