An interdisciplinary study of Gitano life in Spain, edited by anthropologist Teresa San Román and bringing together contributions from scholars in anthropology, sociology, education, architecture, and history. The volume examines the social mechanisms of marginalization and racial discrimination affecting Spanish Roma communities while considering questions of housing, education, social organization, cultural difference, and relations with the wider society. Published in the mid-1980s, the work reflects an important period in the development of Spanish scholarship on Roma communities and remains representative of San Román’s influential approach to distinguishing cultural difference from processes of social exclusion.
