Overview
Curatorial Note
Originally published in Madrid in 1943 and reissued by the Universidad de Cádiz in 1991, this linguistic compilation documents Caló, the language variety historically associated with Spanish Gitano communities, through vocabulary, grammatical notes, verb conjugations, proverbs, songs, prayers, expressions, occupational terminology, and a Spanish–Caló dictionary. The title’s characterization of Caló as “gitano puro” reflects the linguistic concepts and terminology of its period rather than contemporary scholarship. As a historical source, the volume is particularly valuable for tracing the documentation of Caló and the relationship between language, oral tradition, and Gitano cultural life in twentieth-century Spain.
