Overview
Curatorial Note
Andrej Pešta: O Fotki presents the photographic work of Andrej Pešta (1921–2009), a Roma photographer, writer, artist, and activist whose images documented everyday life from the 1950s through the 1980s. Rather than depicting Roma communities through an external ethnographic gaze, Pešta photographed the social world to which he himself belonged, recording family life, friendships, domestic interiors, leisure, travel, work, and community relations. The volume brings together nearly one hundred photographs and places Pešta’s practice within the broader history of Romani cultural and political self-representation in Czechoslovakia. Published by the Museum of Romani Culture in Brno, it constitutes an important visual archive of postwar Roma life and a significant example of photography produced from within Roma experience.
